Square-O-Melons or Shikaku suika

Always on the lookout for a fun food story, I was delighted to find these square watermelons.  Just think how well they would fit in the fridge!  And no rolling around while you slice them.  Apparently this is old news, because now, you can buy your own box and grow your own square watermelons here

Of course, at almost $80 per polycarbonate box, it might be cheaper to make your own.  The watermelons are going for about ¥10,000 (around $83US) in Japan and are about to break into the UK.  Here are some other shapes I found...

Here are some cucumbers...

Now we have all the fall and winter to let our imaginations run wild about what shapes we can create in our gardens next year!  Any ideas?

Blessings,
Sheri

*edit-I HAD to include some of the great nutritional effects of watermelon!  I know you'll enjoy your next taste of it more just knowing these things...

Watermelon helps reduce inflammation that contributes to conditions like asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer, and arthritis.  Pink watermelon is also a good source of Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Lycopene, which travel through the body neutralizing the effects of harmful free radicals.  Lycopene is present in high amounts in watermelon. In contrast to many other food phytonutrients, whose effects have only been studied in animals, lycopene has been repeatedly studied in humans and found to be protective against a growing list of cancers.  For more information on the beneficial effects of watermelon and other fresh foods, go to the World's Healthiest Foods website.

This is NEW news to me!!! I've never seen or heard of those!!!

Hey, any recommendations on a fun refreshment snacks platter for a workshop I'm hosting this Friday.  It's one of those workshops, kinda like scrapbooking but it's really stampin' up, making cards, etc.  I should probably prepare and provide some light snacks or something but I want some new fun ideas and can't think of any! LOL!

So now the question is if you make a square honeydew or cantaloupe will it have a square inside? And I really like the cukes, I think thats my favorite... You get to enjoy the shape even while you eat them.

Hmm... Never seen these odd shapes.  I just know that watermelon doesn't come cheaply here.  That is sad because we ALL love watermelon and usually end up fighting over the last piece.  Maybe I just need to start growing my own...and shape them too!  Thanks for sharing.
