| | Move over Jane Eyre and Les Miserables, I have a new favorite book to add to my 'most favorite books ever' list. It's What Are You So Grumpy About? by Tom Lichtenheld.
Mr. Lichtenheld really captures the depths of despair felt by all of us when we're grumpy. His use of hand lettering and really making the type part of the illustrations gives emphasis in all the right places. We checked it out of the Library, approving it from just a quick look-over. When we actually sat down and read it the whole family was piling on the couch to get a closer look. We returned it knowing we wanted to buy it. But somehow, I forgot the title. For about 8 months I searched through the computer system of the Library, but could not find it! I then resorted to sitting in the children's picture book section looking through every book thinking I could find it that way. Finally, after several days of scaring the little children in their favorite section, I saw the cover on the shelving cart! Victory!
Of course you know it has a bit in it about my favorite subject: healthy
food. But maybe not in a way you would think a health food nut would
like. Here, look...
Read the ingredients list: "Glucose, Sucrose, Dextrose, Corn Syrup, Honey, Sugar, Trace amounts of Wheat Flour just to hold the pieces together." I love it!!!
Now, the grown up cereal from "Boring Acres"..."Gravel, Birdseed, Wood Chips, Corn Husks, Burlap Bags, Weeds, Dirt." And notice, it's a "Regular" food, "No Sugar, No Fat, No Fun". I'd say he has captured the essence of the two camps perfectly. These two pages of this wonderful book demonstrate exactly why I love Obento. Because if I make a bento lunch of Bowser, or Jack Sparrow, my boys will do their best to eat it even if it is made of gravel and burlap bags. I think the 'packaging' makes the food more pleasant and more likely to be eaten. Really...when I'm in the grocery store and I'm looking at two products side by side, many times the packaging influences me greatly. Having a husband who works in this industry does tend to make me more conscious of packaging, but I'm a happy victim of it none the less. Don't even get me started on Kleenex! Why can't they just call my husband if they need some beautiful illustrations? Who wants an ugly box of tissues sitting around for two or three weeks? I've even cut open boxes I like and refilled them with the tissues out of an ugly box, just so I don't have to endure a bad piece of art! But, I digress. Beautiful food is much more pleasant to eat. Just use this to your advantage when asking your family to eat a food that may benefit the body more than the tongue. "The first and most important point to remember is that eating should be a pleasure--do not eat purely for health, you won't live much longer, but it will feel like an eternity." --Porter Go here to buy Tom Lichtenheld's books. Blessings, Sheri
